The Language of Editing

Every project has different needs, and every writer has different goals. The descriptions below are here to help you understand each step of the process so you can feel confident about what your work requires.

Line Editing

Line editing focuses on refining your prose at the sentence and paragraph level, enhancing clarity, flow, and overall voice. We improve pacing, smooth out awkward phrasing, and remove unnecessary repetition to ensure your writing reads cleanly and effectively while still sounding like you. *This edit is the best option for AI-written content.

Copy Editing

The process of copy editing addresses refining your content for accuracy, clarity, and consistency. We’ll make sure transitions from one idea to the next are smooth, standardize the technical aspects (formatting, capitalization) and check spelling and grammar.

Developmental Editing

Developmental editing is typically the earliest stage of the editorial process, focusing on the big-picture elements of your manuscript such as plot, pacing, structure, and character development. At this stage, the goal is to strengthen the foundation of your story rather than refine sentence-level details. Developmental editing does not include proofreading or line/copy editing.

Proofreading

Often the final stage of editing, this process is looking for surface-level errors such as typos, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting inconsistencies.
